- Family unit as the single most important source of nurturing and informal learning across the lifespan.
- Role of the student as an active learner, and the classroom teacher as a facilitator.
- Value of applying basic knowledge, i.e. reading, writing, listening, speaking, and computation, within one's life.
- Need for critical thinking skills to address the issues of our complex, information-based, global community.
- Needs of the family unit to address continuing concerns in the Family and Consumer Science Standards areas of: Financial and Resource Management, Balancing Family, Work, and Community Responsibility, Food Science and Nutrition, and Child Development.
